What is Seva?
Seva is an act of selfless service that is performed without any expectation of result or award. Seva benefits other human beings or society and means “service”, referring to the selfless efforts for the welfare of all. In Hinduism, it is also known as karma yoga, as described in the Bhagavad Gita.
How does Seva work?
There are many ways to support the community at the Studio. From cleaning, washing windows, dusting, cleaning mats, or donating cleaning supplies to supporting social media and marketing efforts or assisting your teacher and fellow classmates; there are countless ways for you to share your skills, passion and gifts to build community within Niantic Yoga.
How often do you do Seva at the Studio?
As often as you are inspired to do so – there are no rules – simply listen to your heart and do what feels right to you. Niantic yoga is so much more than yoga – it is community and companionship, support, and safety.
Why do we do Seva?
Seva supports one another on our journey towards clarity, knowing oneself, and the sacred center that we find on the mat and in our heart during class. The collective conscience of seva builds kula. Kula is a Sanskrit word that can be translated as “community,” “clan” or “tribe.” This word can be used to describe the sense of inclusion and belonging that can be cultivated through fellow students coming together to practice yoga.
But really, why do we do Seva?
Because there’s more to the Studio than classes and workshops. The community that we build together creates a safe place for people to experience kula, to build relationships, and to expand the collective soul of our greater neighborhood. Like the ripples on a pond after a stone is tossed, our actions are echoed throughout our homes, our families, our friends, or neighbors, our community.
So, Seva.
When we walk out into the world as grounded, sacred souls we can in fact help others find their sacred ground and true center. Isn’t that what we all need right now? As we emerge into this new landscape from years of isolation, grief, and loss – we need each other more than ever. Let joy and friendship lead the way every day.
